I attended the inaugural Cycle Ordsall meeting which was called by a cycling GP based at the Ordsall medical centre. I’ve met him at the Salford Cycle forum and he is keen to encourage cycling in his locality to reduce the number of obese patients he sees!
There are massive changes going on around Ordsall and Salford Quays with the local population due to rise from 5k to 15k in the next few years and the working population on the Quays is due to double from 15k to 30k with the BBC’s move to Salford sparking the development of ‘MediaCity’.
There’s a fabulous window of opportunity right now as new schools are to be built, re-development schemes along the Irwell and Bridgewater canals begin and new bridges are to be built across the ship canal as well as all the residential redevelopments that are springing up all over the place. It’s important we act now to ensure there is joined up thinking and a safe and direct cycle infrastructure in place to offer a viable alternative to the car around the Quays because it looks like as if there’s going to be a lot more congestion for cars in the next few years.
2 wheels good, 4 wheels bad!
