One of the standard baby questions frequently asked is who does he/she look like?
I don’t like this question because firstly I’m not very good at picking out anything other than the blindingly obvious and secondly it’s invariably a trick question where almost any answer can hurt at least one of the parent’s feelings. For example ‘He’s got his Dad’s ears’ is not usually taken as a compliment, the best response to this question is to lie.
So to Alex, well he looks like Maria as a baby in a lot of ways, especially the eyes and nose as he has quite a wide bridge. We like his nose but it doesn’t bare any resemblance to either Catriona’s or mine except for the fact that it has a similar number of nostrils. I think he’s got Catriona’s chin and someone spotted that he has a strange dint in his right ear as does his father. I hadn’t even noticed this on myself over the last 35 years. Two features that he’s definately inherited are his fingers and toes. I didn’t realise my toes were considered ‘long’ but Catriona says they are and Alex’s are also noticeably ‘long’. He also has very long, slender (ok womanly) fingers as do I.
Alex’ complextion is fairly ruddy and can change quite quickly. His nose sometimes turns a bit blue and we’ve been warned that ruddier babies can also turn a bit yellow too. He’s got a good even covering of fine hair which I don’t want to brag about too much for fear that it will all fall out as Maria’s did. After 4 weeks she just had a ring of hair which continued to grow whilst other parts remained bare making her look a bit too much like Max Wall.
Maria was born a couple of days over full term but only weighed 6lb 8oz, Alex is half a pound heavier but is substantially longer. Maria was a very petite 46cm where as Alex was born 53cm long which is actually above the 50th centile. Looks like he’s going to be taller than his dad, but that not too difficult!
