We knew that the loft conversion was going to trigger a large amount of decorating but 5 days into our painting and the full scale of the task is starting to dawn on us. As well as the new bedroom, bathroom and staircase/landing to the loft, the building work has affected both the back bedroom and Maria’s bedroom where the old access point to the loft has been filled. Both those rooms were to be decorated anyway, but in addition to all the loft related work we are planning to decorate the hall stairs and landing before December.
I don’t like painting too much, but I’m getting used to it, and I hope I’m improving. All the new plasterwork in the loft bedroom and staircase has now had 2 coats of emulsion and the bare wood in the bedroom has had a couple of coats of undercoat so based on that we can start to estimate the amount of time to complete all the remaining tasks. We’re having a bit of help with all the gloss painting of the hall, staircases and landings (Alan reckons 6 days when I thought it was more like 6 weeks) but aside from that we hope to do everything else over the next 6-8 weeks.
The loft bedroom might be decorated and carpetted in a couple of weeks then we can move stuff up and start on the back bedroom which is to become Maria’s bedroom and after moving her in we can redecorate her old room ready for the new arrival. Loft bathroom needs to be done at some stage (if the plumbers ever finish) and then the hall will need to be wall-papered. It’s a good job we haven’t got a TV to distract us from our evenings of decorating and we’re also very grateful that Maria stays soundly asleep from 7pm every night.
